Liver spots are dark pigmentations on the skin caused by exposure to too much sunlight. They are also referred to as sun spots or age spots. As the skin ages, its immunity against sunlight decreases. When the skin is exposed to sunlight melanin is produced in large quantities to protect the skin which ends up causing the dark spots which are the liver spots. The sun spots vary in color from light brown to red or black. They occur mainly on people above the age of forty and are prominent on the back of the hand, the upper arms, shoulders and the face. These are the areas frequently exposed to sunlight.
Liver spots are however not physiologically related to complications of the liver as earlier believed. The only similarity between liver spots and the liver is the color. Liver spots are completely harmless with only a few cases reported where they hinder detection of cancerous cells. They however cause emotional stress to individuals who view them as unpleasant sights to look at.
They are however numerous remedies for treating the liver spots. These treatments range from cheap and simple home remedies to laser and light therapy treatments. Among the quick home remedies there is the use of lemon juice, castor oil, aloe gel and the apple cider vinegar.
Apple cider vinegar is vinegar made from the fermentation of apple cider. Like many other vinegars, apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid. It also contains lactic and citric acids. Apple cider vinegar is used in home treatment of liver spots and many other ailments including; acne, dandruff, arthritis and is also used by other individuals for weight loss purposes.
In the treatment of liver spots, apple cider vinegar can be used in two different methods. You can mix the vinegar with a glassful of warm water and drink the mixture twice daily for a couple of weeks until the liver spots disappear. If you find the taste of the vinegar to be too strong you can add honey to the mixture. You should avoid undiluted apple cider vinegar since it is quite strong and is known to damage the esophagus.
In the second treatment, blend onions or squeeze them to extract onion juice. Add this onion juice to apple cider vinegar and apply the mixture on the liver spots. Continually to apply this mixture on the affected areas until the spots disappear. The liver spots should fade off after four weeks or more depending on how frequent you use the treatment.
People allergic to apples are however recommended to avoid apple cider vinegar. The apple cider vinegar is nowadays a simple, cheap and quite effective method of treating liver spots as well as other skin ailments.
